President Donald Trump holds up a list of what he claims are reciprocal tariffs from other countries after signing an executive order at a “Make America Wealthy Again” event on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in the White House Rose Garden.

President Donald Trump is ending a tariff exemption for shipments of imported goods that are valued under $800.

Trump’s executive order ends what’s known as the “de minimis” tariff exemption, which the Trump Administration says has been used as a loophole to avoid tariffs and a way to smuggle fentanyl into the United States.

The order ends the exemption for shipments under $800 from all countries.

According to Congress, the number of de minimis shipments into the U.S. increased from 153 million in 2015 to more than 1 billion in 2023.

Under the new order, U.S. travelers can still bring back up to $200 in personal items duty-free.
