Mesa Gateway Airport says it broke several travel records last fiscal year after improving terminals and adding more food options.
The Valley airport spent over $28 million on airport and facility renovations after seeing a higher demand for travel following the pandemic
“So we spent the last couple years increasing the customer amenities, the terminals and now we focus to our airfields,” said Ryan Smith with Mesa Gateway Airport.
Over the next five years Smith said $130 million will be spent to expand and improve runways and taxiways to improve air traffic.
“So we are reconstructing our inside runway; it’s our largest construction project in the history of the airport,” he said.
One of its three 10,000-foot runways will be open late next year after starting the second phase of construction in October.
Smith said the past six months have been the busiest the airport has seen since it began offering commercial flights in 2007.
“We were hoping this would come, we built the facilities convenient for our passengers and luckily they came,” Smith said.
Allegiant Airlines and Sun Country Airlines offer nonstop flights to more than 45 cities out of the airport, along with more than 40 companies importing and exporting products.
“We kind of knew this was coming, we saw the demand kind of peak up,” he said. “We worked with our partners to add new destinations.”
