Phoenix’s two major utilities — Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project — both set new energy demand records this week.

The energy demand came as temperatures made their own records in Phoenix.

Both utilities saw demand peak load records on Wednesday before being broken again on Thursday. APS customers used 8,631 megawatts, and SRP delivered about 8,542 megawatts.

A megawatt can power between 160 and 225 homes. Those records broke the previous one set in early July this year.

Parts of Phoenix also saw the highest temperatures seen in August at 118 degrees.

The power companies have had to adapt to rising demand, as more residents move into the Valley and data centers and other large industrial users continue to move into the state.
