A catering company is set to lay off about 260 Arizonans in early November when its contract ends with an airline with a major hub in Phoenix.

The company is called Sky Chefs and it has formally notified state officials of layoff plans. A spokesperson says employees set to lose their jobs are being offered counseling and other help.

Dave Wells, research director for the Grand Canyon Institute, said American Airlines is switching caterers.

“So American Airlines is one of the largest carriers, if not the largest carrier, at Sky Harbor,” Wells said.

Wells also said the new caterer for American Airlines will be Sky Cafe, a subsidiary of a Georgia-based aviation services firm.

A spokesperson for Sky Chefs says the company caters for other airlines at Sky Harbor Airport and will keep operating in Phoenix.
