A catering company laying off nearly 240 workers at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport after losing its contract with American Airlines says both union and non-union employees will be let go.
Union representatives are urging the new vendor to hire displaced workers, but say applicants are getting the silent treatment.
LSG Sky Chefs’ contract with American Airlines ends in November.
Mari Yepez with Unite Here Local 11 says the laid off workers who’ve applied for jobs with new vendor Sky Cafe aren’t hearing back. The union is calling for the Phoenix City Council to pass a worker retention policy to help those at-risk employees.
"They are community members, our neighbors, they have young children, and they deserve to be protected," she said. "The Phoenix City Council needs to step up and also do the right thing. And protect workers and their livelihoods."
Yepez also said that the Sky Chef layoffs “are a slap in the face” after employees endured what she says are years of harsh working conditions.
