Rising gold prices are driving up an old industry in Arizona — prospecting.
Gold has risen to $4,000 an ounce right now. Here in Arizona, the price spike has led to an increase in prospecting club memberships.
The Roadrunners Prospector’s Club in Phoenix has seen a 10% increase in membership this year, says the club's president, Jeff Roman.
"The price of gold I’m sure made a big factor," he said. "It’s almost doubled in the past couple of years. In the past five years, it’s more than doubled. So yeah, our club keeps getting bigger."
A month ago, gold’s price was just $3,400 an ounce.
