Demolition of buildings formerly part of the old Maricopa County Hospital is still underway near 24th and Roosevelt streets in Phoenix — and the wrecking is being done by one of the largest demolition excavators in the world.
On Tuesday morning, a 5130B UHD excavator, which weighs more than 400 tons and can reach a height of 150 feet, was scraping the front of the building just south of Roosevelt Street. The area will likely be turned into additional parking, Valleywise Health spokesperson Michael Murphy told KJZZ on Tuesday.
The more than 50-year-old facility was also once known as the Maricopa County Medical Center. It was replaced by the Valleywise Health Medical Center, which opened about half a block west of the site in 2024.
“Several other old buildings also were demolished before they began work on the hospital, including an old power plant, administration building and a physician's office building,” said Murphy.
Murphy says the demolition of the old hospital started in June and is scheduled to be completed in January 2026.

Two years into a three-and-a-half-year project, the metal skeleton of the new 10-story Valleywise Health Medical Center stands out near 24th and Roosevelt streets. The new building will be about half a block west of the 50-year-old facility once known as the Maricopa County Hospital, then the Maricopa County Medical center and now Valleywise.
