Arizona Public Service is announcing plans for a 2,000 megawatt natural gas power plant near Gila Bend.

Two-thousand megawatts is about a quarter of APS’s peak demand record set in August and is enough to power about 300,000 homes in Arizona.

The Desert Sun Power Plant will reportedly be done in two phases, with all customers paying for the first phase that’s expected to be up in late 2030.

Phase two doesn’t have an expected running date yet, but APS says it will be paid for by large industrial users like data centers using a subscription type model.

Utilities like APS are expected to keep using natural gas, especially for data centers as demand from the power hungry facilities continues to grow.

The gas will come from Texas, as the utility announced earlier this year that it will be getting the fuel from a new Transwestern Pipeline.
