Desert Sky Mall in west Phoenix has reopened after being temporarily closed due a partial roof collapse caused by storm damage, a Phoenix Fire Department and mall officials said.
A structural collapse was reported at the mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Todd Keller said in a press release on Wednesday night. There were no reported injuries.
“Crews arrived and found a single occupancy inside the mall with a partial ‘drop ceiling’ roof collapse causing a main water line to be severed,” said Keller.
Keller said Wednesday night the entire mall would be closed for an undetermined amount of time “due to the fire suppression system (sprinklers) being disabled and flooding.”
On Thursday morning, workers were seen at the fenced off southeast entrance of the mall near the Mercado De Los Cielos. Mall officials said early Thursday afternoon that the mall was open, but a small number of retailers in the Mercado De Los Cielos would remain closed.
