Mesa City Council has approved a theme park district for the former Fiesta Mall site. The Palo District includes the redevelopment of about 80 acres of land.
The city of Mesa previously expressed interest in hosting a Major League Soccer team, and a multiuse soccer stadium is part of the proposed Palo District. The site will also have “restaurant, retail, lodging, office and residential uses.”
Jeff Robbins is the city’s redevelopment administrator.
“So the city of Mesa was approached by the owner of the privately owned 80 acre property that's the former location of the Fiesta Mall. And we were approached to create a theme park district over that property," he said.
City Council members approved the district on Wednesday.
Prior to the vote, there were no active theme park districts in Arizona. Coconino County along with the city of Phoenix and the town of Williams formed the state’s only other theme park district in 2015.
