GameStop — retailer of new and used video games, accessories and collectibles — has closed five of its 32 stores in the Phoenix area and several more around the state.

According to the store locator on the company’s website, the following Valley locations have closed in January:

  • Desert Sky Esplanade, 7515 W. Encanto Blvd., Phoenix
  • Maryvale Plaza, 5215 W. Indian School Road, Phoenix
  • Happy Valley Towne Center, 2501 W. Happy Valley Road, Phoenix
  • Superstition Springs Mall, 6555 E. Southern Ave., Mesa
  • Village Plaza, 12611 N Tatum Blvd., Phoenix

GameStop also has closed two locations in Tucson, one in Flagstaff and their only locations in Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City this month.

This follows the announcement earlier this month of a new compensation package for CEO Ryan Cohen that is dependent on the company reaching a set of performance goals.

“His compensation is entirely ‘at-risk,’ meaning he will only be paid if the company achieves significant market and operational goals,” GameStop said in a Jan. 7 filing

The company's shares are down substantially from May 2024 when influential investor Keith Gill, popularly known as “Roaring Kitty,” appeared online for the first time in three years to declare his support for GameStop.

Gill helped ignite a “meme” stock craze in early 2021, when GameStop’s stock price soared above $120. The company’s stock was trading close to $21 early Tuesday.

An unofficial blog that tracks GameStop closings says three other Valley locations closed in 2025. The blog lists a total of 470 stores that have closed nationwide so far in 2026.
