The city of Scottsdale is moving forward with plans to build a new parking structure in Old Town. The move has drawn criticism from residents.

The city of Scottsdale recently held a public meeting to discuss the project’s design and construction.

The development of the $18 million project began after Scottsdale voters approved a bond measure in 2019 for various municipal uses, including public parking facilities.

Those opposed to the parking garage are concerned that its placement at First Street and Brown Avenue would affect the surrounding aesthetic and displace the local farmers market.

Crystal Caroll is a Scottsdale business owner.

“That space is about the worst space you can put it in just because of what it does to our old town area,” she said.

However, proponents of the garage have pointed to the need for additional parking space in the city.
