There is less than a month left for Americans to file taxes and Attorney General Kris Mayes is urging Arizonans to be aware of tax-related scams.

The Attorney General’s Office is reporting tax-season schemes in which scammers tell targets they must act quickly in order to take advantage of government assistance programs which don’t actually exist.

“Don’t bite on this,” Mayes warned in a new public service announcement video with the Better Business Bureau.

Mayes said scammers may call, text, or reach out on social media pressuring people to share sensitive tax information. She said the real Internal Revenue Service never gets in touch that way — the agency typically sends a letter first.

“The best way to check for tax issues and communicate with the IRS is through your account set up at IRS.gov,” Mayes said.

Arizonans who have been targeted by scams can report the incident to the Attorney General’s Office at www.azag.gov/consumer or by calling 602-542-5763.
