Walmart is adding electric vehicle charging stations at stores throughout the country, including several in the Phoenix metro area.

The first Walmart EV chargers in Arizona became available in November. They can be found at seven locations across the East Valley, including Tempe, Mesa, Apache Junction and Queen Creek, with future chargers planned in San Tan Valley and south Phoenix.

In a statement, Walmart said its goal is to make charging as convenient and easy as a routine trip to Walmart. Customers can charge their vehicles while shopping and will be notified when charging is complete.

The ABB E-mobility A400 fast-chargers can deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power per unit. They can charge up to two vehicles in parallel, providing 200 kW per car when used simultaneously or the full 400 kW to a single car.

The chargers include North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) fast-charging connectors. They should be compatible with most electric vehicles, with the possible exception of some older-model Teslas built before 2021 and Japanese EVs using the CHAdeMO standard.

Fast charging takes around 15 to 30 minutes but depends on the type of vehicle, the condition of the battery and ambient air temperature. Many EVs slow charging speeds when the battery is around 80% full.

Chargers can only be accessed and paid for through the Walmart app. Credit card terminals are not available on Walmart chargers.

Prices are locked in at the start of the charging session. Customers can see the per kilowatt hour rate in the app prior to charging.

In a statement, ABB E-mobility said 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart. They said the proximity to charging stations increases store traffic by up to 4%, and charging sessions increase the time spent in-store.

“We’re building a convenient and reliable network that gives our customers the ability to charge their EVs quickly and affordably without having to change their daily shopping routine,” said Adam Happel, the general manager of Walmart EV Charging.
