The Arizona Department of Transportation has officially approved its five year plan, which will bring improvements to highways across the state. The first of $11.3 billion in projects will begin construction in 2027.
ADOT spokesperson Garin Groff said residents in Maricopa County have many upgrades to look forward to.
“One of the big ones for people who are in the West Valley is ADOT will begin construction of a new freeway called State Route 30. That is a reliever to Interstate 10,” Groff said.
Groff said funding for the plan comes from federal grants and a voter-approved sales tax. He said the new state route will help to alleviate traffic in the West Valley.
"State Route 30 is an entirely new freeway. It's a little bit north of the Salt River. A little bit south of Broadway Road. It may be a little hard to envision since there is nothing there,” Groff said.
Groff said construction will begin on the new freeway's first segment in 2027.
