The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded over $33 million to airports in Arizona, with more than half going to Phoenix Sky Harbor.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement over $1.7 billion in grants announced on Thursday are for upgrades to America’s airports, including runway rehabilitations and safety improvements.
Jon Brodsky, a spokesperson for Phoenix Sky Harbor, said the airport’s allocation, which totals more than $18 million, will go toward projects currently under construction.
“These two are airport improvement program grants,” Brodsky said. “One of them for our very large taxiway U project, and the other one for the Terminal 3 North Concourse Apron Project.
The taxiway U project bridges over Sky Harbor Boulevard on the west side of the airport, creating a new connection between the north and south airfield. Currently, the only taxiways are on the east side of the airport.
The project’s total budget surpasses $330 million, and is expected to be completed in 2027.
The Terminal 3 concourse project will add over 173,000 square feet of space to the terminal, including six new passenger gates, restaurants and cafes and an outdoor terrace.

Brodsky added the “$9.5 million is going towards the taxiway U project, and $8.5 million is going toward the Terminal 3 North Concourse Apron."
Brodsky said the airport regularly applies for federal grants and is very excited to receive grant funding for important projects.
