Maricopa County has seen historically high numbers of eviction filings over the past few years. Now the county is launching a new pilot program to assist vulnerable renters.
Renters in four Phoenix ZIP codes with especially high eviction rates will be able to apply for one-time rental assistance. Eligible households may receive up to $3,200 to cover up to two months of rent.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors budgeted $800,000 for the pilot this fiscal year. The program was designed with input from the landlord trade group, the Arizona Multihousing Association.
Eviction filings can strain county resources and a record of eviction can make it harder for tenants to secure future housing.
The County Board of Supervisors said the goal of the program is to intervene before families wind up in court.
“The purpose of this pilot is to identify a potential eviction case early on, thus avoiding late fees and legal fees for both parties,” board chair Kate Brophy McGee said in a press release. “Many Maricopa County residents dedicate most of their monthly income directly towards their rent. When an accident happens, they are forced to redirect their limited funds, leaving them with no way to pay for the roof over their heads.”
County officials plan to follow up with residents and property owners to develop data to determine the pilot program’s future.
