Arizona drivers will spend over a dollar more per gallon at the pump than they did over the previous Labor Day weekend. Prices will average around $4.52 per gallon statewide — that’s 38 cents above the national average.
AAA spokesman Doug Johnson said "Arizona gas prices are up about $1.06 from where they were a year ago when it was $3.46 per gallon.”
Rising crude oil prices and increased holiday travel demand are to blame for the increase.
Johnson also said Maricopa County would see the most expensive gas at $4.64 per gallon, while Cochise County would be the least expensive at $4.30.
According to Johnson, prices may begin to drop starting Sept. 15, as the summer driving season comes to an end and pumps switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline.
