The parking garages at Phoenix Sky Harbor are crumbling and need extensive structural repairs, according to city documents.
On Aug. 26, the Phoenix City Council approved a contract for up to $105 million for contractor PCL Buildings Inc. to repair the parking garages for Terminals 3 and 4 at Sky Harbor.
The agenda from the August meeting says the garages are “exhibiting signs of structural deterioration and are in need of comprehensive structural repairs.”
Sky Harbor spokesperson Jon Brodsky said the repairs are proactive and routine.
“These garages are older garages, and some of the infrastructure that's in the garage is nearing the end of its life cycle,” Brodsky said.
The Terminal 3 garage, which opened in 1979, requires replacement of expansion joints and bearing pads. The Terminal 4 garage, which opened in 1990, requires replacement of the garage seals and expansion joints on levels four through nine.
Crews had performed spot repairs and maintenance over the years, but the city says components have reached the end of their “useful life.”
Brodsky said planning is still underway, but the work most likely will occur overnight to minimize passenger impacts.
Construction is scheduled to start in early 2028.
