SRP is investing $3 million into research projects at Arizona’s three public universities this fall.
The 34 research and development projects span a variety of topics like sustainability, wildfire mitigation and energy efficiency.
Alejandra Mendez is a senior engineer at SRP. She said the grants are designed to find solutions to some of the challenges the company faces as it tries to maintain reliable power and water delivery for its customers.
“We have a project with NAU where they are using soil moisture sensors across an area of the forest to help us identify the areas that are more susceptible to wildfire," Mendez said. "That will help us address those risks before there's a wildfire.”
Each project proposal is overseen by an adviser at SRP.
“[The advisers are] checking in constantly with the professors and the students to make sure that they stay on track and that whatever results from the research will be useful to SRP," Mendez said.
SRP will work on 22 projects with Arizona State University, four projects with Northern Arizona University, and eight projects with University of Arizona.
