On Monday, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced American Airlines will become the primary carrier of the future West Terminal. American Airlines is the largest airline carrier in Phoenix, serving more than 40% of passenger traffic, according to the city of Phoenix.
The new terminal is expected to be built on the west of the Terminal 3, and is the the first new construction since Terminal 4 opened in 1990. Work is scheduled to begin in 2029, with the opening expected in 2033.
The announcement comes along with the unveiling of “Destination PHX250,” a development program for the airport’s future capital investments, as it prepares to serve an anticipated 90 million passengers by 2050.
“Phoenix Sky Harbor is a powerful economic engine for our state, and it’s the gateway for business opportunity and tourism,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in a press release. “The West Terminal is a game-changing investment in our economic future, and will help us continue to welcome travelers with best-in-class service, set a new standard for the passenger experience, and meet the needs of our growing community. I’m looking forward to working with American Airlines as our anchor tenant in this exciting endeavor.”
