Tucson’s daily newspaper is now under the same ownership as the Arizona Republic.
USA TODAY Co., formerly known as Gannett, announced Monday that it was fully acquiring the Arizona Daily Star from Lee Enterprises.
It’s a deal that both parties call a regionally strategic transaction to support local journalism.
“As leaders in the industry, we have a responsibility to ensure local news organizations are positioned for long-term success. We are proud to welcome the Arizona Daily Star and its talented team to the USA TODAY Network and look forward to building on its longstanding tradition of trusted local journalism," said Michael A. Anastasi, senior vice president of local news, USA TODAY Network, in a statement Monday.
Under a joint operating agreement, USA TODAY has owned a 50% share of the Daily Star since 2009 when the Tucson Citizen ceased publication. The Daily Star celebrates its 150th anniversary next year.
