Researchers at the University of Arizona are working to prevent rechargeable batteries from catching fire and exploding. That could affect anything from the electric car in your driveway to the cellphone in your pocket.

Aerospace and mechanical engineering professor Vitaliy Yurkiv said their research shows that they can identify patterns in battery behavior that can give advance warning of an explosion.

“If you track the change of voltage, current, which is going through all these batteries, and other properties, we are able to identify which battery is about to explode and we can actually switch it off to prevent fire of whole electric vehicle," Yurkiv said.

He said they’re getting real-time data from electric vehicles in Tucson to teach their AI to recognize when a battery is about to explode.
