A study from the company and product reviewer Consumer Affairs ranked all 50 states and Washington, D.C., on public education.
Arizona came in last.
The study used data from College Board, Gun Violence Archive and multiple government sources to score each state in four different categories.
They included K-12 performance, safety, school funding and resources and quality of higher education.
Arizona ranked second lowest in school funding. The most recent data from the National Center for Education statistics shows Arizona had the highest pupil-to-teacher ratio.
Marisol Garcia is president of the Arizona Education Association, the state’s largest teacher union. She says low wages and inadequate classroom support is driving teachers away.
“If you don’t have teachers, where are the students going to go?” Garcia said. “More and more, with the high inability of us keeping folks in the classroom, students won’t have anywhere to go.”
