Arizona State University has updated its general curriculum for new students.

There are nine areas of study in the new general course requirements, including classes in sustainability as well as governance and civic engagement.

Only incoming students are affected by the changes.

“It's a mix of what you might think of as the traditional disciplinary ways of thinking about knowledge, right, humanities, science, but also interdisciplinary categories where students can really focus on solving 21st century problems," said Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Anne Jones.

Jones led the project and says she worked with staff and students to develop the course map.

“You're trying to provide a foundation for everyone who has a college degree to go out and start to think about solving problems," Jones said.

ASU says it is the first general curriculum overhaul since the 1980s.
