Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce has been hit with an eight-year show-cause order by the NCAA. The penalty is due to violations Pierce made during his time as an assistant coach at Arizona State University.

Until 2032, any colleges looking to hire Pierce will have to provide the NCAA reasons why it should not be penalized for hiring him. Former Arizona State staffer Anthony Garnett also incurred similar penalties.

The penalties stem from impermissible contact with 35 recruits during the one year COVID-19 dead period. That included tryouts, facility tours and entertainment over the span of 15 weekends.

The NCAA said Pierce along with other staff arranged the visits with recruits. Pierce also arranged or personally provided free meals, apparel, airfare and/or lodging to 27 prospects.

Eight of the prospects eventually enrolled at Arizona State and competed in 19 contests while ineligible.
