The Scottsdale Unified School District governing board unanimously approved bringing sex education back to classrooms after at least a four-year hiatus.

Students would note automatically be put into sex ed classes.

"We believe in Scottsdale that it’s important for parents to have choice and to own the opportunity to access high quality instructional material for their children. Because this is opt-in, we believe that it is the best way to ensure parental choice," said Superintendent Scott Menzel.

These classes will be offered in grades five, seven and nine to provide age-appropriate lessons that promote “positive body images, health-enhancing behaviors and risk avoidance.”

In Arizona, sex education is not required and cannot be given before fifth grade.
