The Tucson Unified School District has partnered with a national organization to teach young men about healthy masculinity.

The organization, A Call to Men, aims to create gender equity by teaching young men how they can be allies for women and offers training on ‘respectful manhood.’

María Federico Brummer works for the Tucson Unified School District. She says the organization is providing mentors to work with its middle and high school students in small groups.

“They’ll do some critical analysis of media and so what are some of the messages that are out there about masculinity in the media," Brummer said. "They’ll also talk about their own personal journeys and so maybe interrupting the cycles of violence, cycles of toxic masculinity."

The district received a $10,000 grant from A Call to Men for its Healthy Masculinity Project.

“Some students need additional mentoring," Brummer said. "It might be just behavior. They may have had a loss in their family where they’re seeking a male role model.”
