Five Phoenix schools are set to close due to declining enrollment and a budget shortfall in the millions.
The Roosevelt Elementary School Board voted 4-1 to close the schools on Thursday. There are plans to eventually reopen two of them.
Board president Shelley Jackson voted with the majority.
“Making a decision to close, for me, is deeply personal,” she said. “Especially as one of the schools that's being recommended tonight is the one my family went to.”
Roughly 5,000 students will be impacted by the closures and will be moved to other schools. There are currently no plans to sell the properties. There are 18 schools in the Roosevelt school district.
These are the schools that are closing:
- Maxine O. Bush Elementary
- John R. Davis Elementary
- C.J. Jorgensen Academy
- V.H. Lassen Academy
- Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary
