West Coast Conference sues GCU after university joins Mountain West Conference

The West Coast Conference is suing Grand Canyon University over an alleged breach of contract after the school announced it would instead join the Mountain West Conference — just six months after signing with the WCC.

GCU’s membership with the WCC was supposed to begin in July 2025, and the college had paid the first installment of an entry fee shortly after signing the agreement to join in May.

The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday by the WCC alleges that the remainder of the entry fee has not been paid, nor has the exit fee, even though GCU announced last month that it would be joining the Mountain West Conference in 2026 instead.

The fee amounts were not disclosed by either party, but would be significant for a smaller conference like the WCC, and would especially sting after the loss of big schools like Gonzaga and BYU.

GCU said in a statement that it understands the conference’s disappointment that it declined the invitation but denied any breach of contract.
