New HonorHealth research center aims to turn scientific discoveries into disease treatment

The HonorHealth Research Institute in Scottsdale is forming a new Center for Translational Science.

The idea behind it is to bridge the gap between basic science discoveries and translating them into better ways to diagnose and treat diseases.

Dr. Michael Gordon, the chief medical officer for HonorHealth Research Institute, said one example is that over the past several years, more therapies have been developed in cancer research to target proteins or mutations that may be responsible for the development and growth of the disease.

“And figuring out which drugs or drug combinations will work best for patients as a population or as an individual is a huge unmet need, which we hope to bridge with this new center," Gordon said.

Gordon said he expects the program to get started within the next two months. It will be located in downtown Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.

"As we start our third decade of research dedicated to advancing treatment, we are excited about the prospect of delivering better care more efficiently to a greater number of patients in the city, in the county, and in the state," Gordon said.
