Mesa Public Schools is the largest district in the state.

Arizona’s largest public school district announced immediate layoffs as well as future cuts for the 2025-26 school year.

Mesa Public Schools laid off roughly 42 certified staffers effective on Monday. An additional 147 district level positions, including three administrative roles, are to be eliminated ahead of the next school year.

In a statement by the district, school officials attribute the cuts to a decline of around 1,500 students in 2024-25. A further decline of 1,800 enrolled students is projected for the 2025-26 school year. With the decline in students comes a reduction in state and federal funding that necessitate budget cuts of nearly $17 million.

A new funding model prioritizes resources for schools that serve students who demonstrate economic hardship. The model's intended focus is to support those most affected by poverty and provide them with the opportunities of other students.

The district says nearly 90% of their budget supports their employees. According to the district's FY26 budget sheet, their top priority of providing high quality education and support for all students remains steadfast.

All grade levels have been impacted by the decline in enrollment, and no Mesa public schools are at capacity.
