The West Valley is becoming a technological hub with the construction of the TSMC semiconductor plant. Peoria is partnering with a west side education program to offer career and technical education opportunities.
Peoria has entered into an agreement with Western Maricopa Education Center, or West-MEC, to build a facility that will serve residents and students.
The planned facility will be situated on city-owned land at 95th and Peoria avenues.
“The city of Peoria is really on a push to bring more jobs to our citizens and part of that is developing a skilled workforce," said Mike Faust, a deputy city manager.
Programming for the campus remains under review.
“So over the next year or so, in planning phases, West-MEC will begin to refine that list of program offerings, which will then drive the individual design of the campus itself," Faust said.
With many students choosing not to go to a four-year university nor acquire a two-year degree, Faust says the education provided by West-MEC provides the necessary trade skills to earn high wages and to help communities thrive.
