The Phoenix City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to purchase 4.56 acres of land from the Isaac School District. The purchase will help facilitate the development of an affordable housing project near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road.
That will create 72 affordable units serving households at or below 80% of the Area Median Income.
Earlier this year, the Isaac School District was placed under state receivership when it was discovered that the district had overspent its budget by millions of dollars.
Late last month, the Tolleson Union High School District agreed to buy one of Isaac’s middle schools for $25 million to help alleviate the debt.
Last summer, the Maricopa County Superintendent's Office told the Arizona Department of Education it was concerned the district was over budget.
In an annual financial report to ADE, district officials misrepresented the state of their finances.
State Board of Education Executive Director Sean Ross said it didn’t include all data and expenses and the district later rectified it with a new report.
