Hobbs signs bill to expand mandatory reporters at schools for suspected child abuse

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has signed a bill into law that expands and more clearly defines who must report abuse or suspected abuse of a minor.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Sen. Carine Werner, says that in a school setting, reporting to a supervisor or resource officer is not good enough, especially if the abuser works at the school.

“They get caught doing something and instead of calling the police, they let them go and then the teacher or aid will resign and they will work for another school," Werner said.

She says the new law now includes substitute teachers and governing board members as mandatory reporters. It also mandates more police involvement.
