The Arizona Western College will introduce a Spanish-language electrician certification program for fall classes. The program comes as another addition to the trade courses offered by the institution’s entrepreneurial college.
Industry partners requested the Fundamentos de Electricidad program, and the school wanted to expand its technical education.
The college says this opportunity teaches students basic electrical wiring skills and gives them the possibility of graduating with an occupational certificate in two semesters.
Miguel Alvarez is the associate dean of reskilling and corporate training at the college.
“They can expect that they're going to get real-world, hands-on experience. They're going to earn an industry certification that is highly recognized through the National Center for Construction Education and Research,” he said.
He also said the college involved itself in educational matters for others.
“The college has always had a vested interest in addressing the educational gap between those that speak English and those that don't,” he said.
Alvarez also says the one goal of the program is to upskill community members and develop them for the workforce.
