Tucson Unified School District tested a new emergency alert system Monday morning.

With the new system, teachers are given a panic button they can wear on their lanyard that instantly notifies first responders to critical incidents, from medical emergencies to active shooters.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says the idea came after the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

"One of the things I proposed back then with all the chiefs was that we come up with a one touch, if you will, push button and alert the whole world that we have a crisis and people need to respond," he said.

Nanos says they are working to incorporate the system into every school in Pima County.
