Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee is calling for an investigation into one Maricopa County school district after it requested a $3 million cash advance from the state. Yee says the Nadaburg Unified School District claims to be facing a $5 million deficit in the final months of 2025.

In a Wednesday statement, Yee says she has asked the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to instruct the Arizona Auditor General to conduct a special investigation. Yee also wants the state board of education to review the findings to possibly put the district into receivership.

But Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne is defending the district, and calls Yee “irresponsible.”

“The district has had unexpectedly fast growth, and cash advances are fairly common. They’re entitled to it under the formulas," Horne said.

Yee said the District cited “a low ending fund balance from the prior fiscal year” and “decreased property tax collections.”

Yee also says Nadaburg schools did not show what the cash would be used for, or any measures taken to reduce costs.
