In 2023, the Arizona Board of Regents asked the state’s three public universities to develop plans to help with the health care workforce.
Arizona State University is now recruiting students for its new medical school as it has received preliminary accreditation.
Students enrolled at the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering will work to receive concurrent MD and Master of Science in medical engineering degrees.
“Artificial intelligence and other forms of technology are transforming every part of our lives, and health is no exception. But we believe that the doctors of the future shouldn't just use these new technologies. They should be the ones designing, building, and applying them to solve humanity's toughest health challenges," said Holly Lisanby, the founding dean of the new college.
Classes will start in August of next year for the first cohort which will be 36 students. The school says it will grow with time.
The exact amount of the gift to establish the school isn’t known, but it’s expected to be around $100 million and is ASU’s second-largest received.
Groundbreaking of the ASU Health Headquarters will be in spring and completed over two years. In the meantime, medical students will take classes nearby at the Mercado in downtown Phoenix.
