The Arizona Board of Regents has created a new scholarship in an effort to get more students to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

With support from the Arizona Community Foundation, Helios Education Foundation and Valley of the Sun United Way, ABOR will give 25 students one-time $2,000 scholarships.

There’s no academic or need-based qualifier, like some other scholarship opportunities. To be eligible for the College Ready AZ FAFSA Scholarship, high school seniors just have to be planning to attend one of the state’s public universities or community colleges immediately after graduation, fill out the FASA and write an essay about how the money would support their personal and educational journey.

The state typically ranks among the lowest in the country for FAFSA completion rates. About 20% of current Arizona high school seniors have completed the form — a 4% increase compared to the same time frame last year.

Last year, ABOR set a goal to get 40% of Arizona’s high school seniors to complete the form — and they exceeded that goal. This year, ABOR is trying to reach 48% by implementing a number of new strategies.
