The U.S. Department of Education has formally recognized Grand Canyon University in Phoenix as a nonprofit institution of higher learning.

The latest decision aligns with determinations by the IRS, the Higher Learning Commission, the State of Arizona and the NCAA.
It follows a four-year IRS audit completed in May, and a unanimous U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision last year that concluded an incorrect legal standard was applied in 2019 when the department denied GCU’s nonprofit designation.
Earlier this year, the department rescinded a more than $37 million fine against the private university on allegations it misled students about the cost of its graduate programs.
GCU President Brian Mueller said in a statement Monday morning that he appreciates the Department of Education’s "objective and thorough review of GCU’s operations.”
“We look forward to working with the department in a cooperative manner moving forward and being part of the conversation to address the many challenges facing higher education," Mueller said.
