Maricopa County Community College District Chancellor Steven R. Gonzales announced Tuesday that he is stepping down from his position in June.
Gonzales has accepted a leadership position in the education department at Kansas State University.
Gonzales was officially appointed as MCCCD chancellor in fall 2022 after serving on an interim basis since January 2020.
During his 13 years with Maricopa Community Colleges, Gonzales implemented numerous programs, including the system's first bachelor's degree offerings.
"I think our greatest accomplishment that I have had is building a culture where we've accepted it as our responsibility to advance this organization in spite of some of the challenges that we've experienced," Gonzales said.
Gonzales says the governing board will soon begin a national search for the district's next chancellor.
