Women from eight universities are scheduled to compete in a flag football tournament held in metro Phoenix in April.
That women’s flag football is set to be played at the 2028 Olympics is evidence of the sport’s growing popularity.
The multi-day college tournament here is organized by the Fiesta Sports Foundation.
Executive director and CEO, Erik Moses, said the vision is to create a national stage for women’s flag football.
“And then helping to shape the sport can become. The NCAA is looking at making it a division one varsity sport. Right now, teams compete at the club level.”
Some of the schools set to compete are ASU, GCU and the University of Southern California.
“We’re going to give these young ladies a bowl experience. We are going to treat them comparably to the way we treated the athletes from Ole Miss and Miami,” Moses said.
Which means players are to stay at top hotels, receive gifts and more.
