The Chandler Unified School District is launching a new safety committee after a student died after he was hit by a car outside Chandler High School.
Jayben Camacho was hit on April 2, while crossing a street near the campus. He was taken to a hospital and later died. According to his family’s GoFundMe page, the 16-year-old’s organ donation helped save four lives.
Now, his former school district is launching a Safety and Security Advisory Committee to evaluate the landscape of the campus and make changes to daily operations.
Students currently have the option to leave campus during lunch periods and Camacho was hit while doing so. A letter sent to families this week said the committee will reevaluate that practice, among other options.
In an email to KJZZ, a district spokesperson said: "Our primary focus remains on the direct input and well-being of our parents, students, school staff, city officials, and the Chandler Police Department."
