The Chandler Unified School District’s new Safety and Security Advisory Committee met for the first time on April 21.
The committee was formed after Chandler High School student Jayben Camacho was hit by a car while crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk near campus. He was taken to the hospital and later died. According to his family’s GoFundMe page, the 16-year-old’s organ donation helped save several lives.
At a recent governing board meeting, Superintendent Frank Narducci said members are looking at student pedestrian traffic patterns around Chandler High School.
“[They are] identifying existing challenges and recommending possible feasible solutions," Narducci said. "They had a well attended meeting and will be having another meeting next week where solutions will be looked into as well.”
Students currently have the option to leave campus during lunch periods. Camacho's accident happened during lunch on April 2. A letter sent to families said the committee will reevaluate that practice, among other options.
