Phoenix Union High School District voted Thursday to officially rename the school formerly known as Cesar Chavez High School.
The campus near 39th Avenue and Baseline Road is now Cactus Canyon High School, the district announced on its Facebook page.
The name was chosen from several options presented in a survey taken by about 6,500 community members. Among the other top picks were Laveen High School and Champion Community High School.
The decision comes after several women earlier this year accused the late civil rights icon of sexual abuse.
The school was temporarily called Champions Circle High School while the board was considering a permanent name.
Superintendent Thea Andrade said in late March the name change is estimated to cost more than $2 million and will take several months.
