Tucsonan Tashua Spiess has had an opportunity to see horse racing from the inside.

“Going to a track and watching races live is a whole different ballgame than watching it on TV,” she said. “It’s definitely magical and gives you chills.”

The University of Arizona junior arrived on campus with hopes of becoming a veterinarian, but then saw her interest in animal welfare pivot toward horse racing. Spiess says the university’s Race Track Industry Program, part of the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, turned her love for horses into a career choice.

The Race Track Industry Program held its first classes at UA in 1974, supported by the American Quarter Horse Association. One of the key attractions for students was the chance to study the business year-round, and attend an annual seminar that brings industry leaders to campus, helping students understand the business of horse racing.
