Scottsdale Community College broke ground Wednesday on a new 22,000-square-foot equine science facility at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

The development marks a major expansion of SCC’s long-running program and its partnership with the city of Scottsdale.

In Scottsdale’s Equine Science program, students learn about horse care, health and training to prepare for various careers in the equine industry.

SCC President Eric Leshinskie said the new facility at WestWorld is a more convenient location for students and will give them hands-on experience.

“They're going to be around an area that is very connected to the horse industry and the equine industry from the Arabian horse show that is there on an annual basis to rodeos that occur there as well," Leshinskie said. "So they're going to be around horse professionals.”

The new space will include 10 horse stalls, two round pens, and a dedicated farrier station.

Leshinskie said SCC's program gets students on the path to become vet techs or work with horses in other ways.

“[For] some of our students, it's also that, they are horse owners and so it's their ability to then take care of their own horses in a much more sound manner," Leshinskie said.

Construction is expected to be completed by this summer, in time to support fall semester classes.
