The Peoria Unified School District has named a new principal for Centennial High School. It comes amid an ongoing police investigation into alleged sexual abuse by two former employees.
Two former Centennial teachers were accused of having inappropriate relationships with the same student. In May, Scott Hollabaugh announced he would be stepping away from his role as principal.
At a meeting Thursday night, the district’s governing board appointed Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Darien Schoolcraft to replace Hollabaugh.
“I stand here tonight excited to continue helping students dream and achieve at Centennial," Schoolcraft said. "Thank you for this incredible honor to be the next principal.”
Board President Jeff Tobey said he believes Schoolcraft will bring an even-keeled approach to the role at a time when a lot of eyes are on the district. But board members Janelle Bowles and Heather Rooks expressed concerns about appointing a new principal in the middle of an investigation. Rooks said there are more questions that need to be answered first.
“And it’s not because I’m declaring Mr. Schoolcraft guilty of wrongdoing, but I believe it is our responsibility to protect students, follow a process and ensure that every individual connected to these matters have been appropriately reviewed," Rooks said.
Schoolcraft's new role was approved by a vote of 3-2.
