The two candidates running for Maricopa County sheriff addressed allegations surrounding them in Thursday's debate.
Republican candidate Jerry Sheridan said that he was doing the right thing when violating Judge Murray Snow’s ordered reforms to discipline his deputies.
The order came after Sheridan and his former boss, Joe Arapio, were found in civil contempt after a civil rights lawsuit found the department guilty of racially profiling Latino drivers in 2013.
"He also wanted me to discipline some of my deputies, about 45 of them, for policies that didn’t exist when they did it, and I refused to do it. So yes, I stood my ground," Sheridan said.
Sheridan also said that he didn’t have anything to do with procedures that resulted in deputies that racially profiled Latino drivers.
Democratic candidate Tyler Kamp, a former Phoenix police lieutenant, said that a sexual harassment complaint against him involving a Phoenix police officer has gone unfounded.
"This investigation was never completed. And I’m confident that if it was completed, I would be found not responsible just like the other two people that were listed in that complaint," Kamp said.
An investigation was completed, according to city records. Investigators found the complaint to be substantiated, but by that time, Kamp had already left the department.
